My Personal Management Philosophy:
Every teacher should have his/her management philosophy laid out the best they can before school begins. Even as a first year teacher, having a plan for management is a necessary component to a well-run classroom, even if the plan and philosophy completely changes by the end of the year. Personally, my management techniques run right along the middle line between the behavioralist and humanist theories. I love components of both theories, but there are areas within each that I don't like as much, and I definitely see myself using a combined approach to instruct my students. For example, I like a mostly controlled classroom where the teacher is being the facilitator, but I also want to incorporate group work into students' daily activities. I will also incorporate the behavioralist method of reinforcement for student behavior, explained further within the Classroom Management Plan tab, while still bringing in reflection components for negative behavior, an element of Humanism. I plan to intertwine specific, measurable projects with clear objectives and directions with still student choice, group work, and discussions.
To begin the year, I want to make sure all of my students feel welcome and comfortable. I will have bright colors incorporated into my room on posters, bulletin boards, on their desks, etc. I plan to contact the students' parents and ask them to bring/send in pictures of students and their family members so I can hang them up around the room to make my students feel right at home. I will have a bulletin board to display student work, my behavior poster large and bright in an area everyone can see, and helpful academic posters hung around the room. This will really help students to feel like this room is somewhere they can be comfortable and learn to the best of their ability.
Throughout my experiences and the material I have learned this semester, I plan to start of the year strict when it comes to classroom management. As explained deeper throughout my website, explaining rules and procedures to students and practicing continuously is an important and necessary component to a well-run classroom. I will start off the year by role-playing, modeling, and practicing each rule and procedure until students perform them out of habit. I will not let behavior issues slide, and I will make sure rules and procedures are followed correctly. I will make sure to reinforce positive behavior, as well as be strict on my negative behaviors so students learn quickly it is better to show respectful, positive behaviors than disrespectful, negative behaviors. I will create a classroom community where every student feels safe and successful to learn. If, throughout the year or toward the end, students show me that they can follow the rules and distinguish between positive and negative behavior, I will have the ability to loosen up a little and let students have a little more freedom.
Another component of classroom management that is important to me is organization. Personally, I have always been an organized person, and like things in place. In my future classroom, I plan to be extremely organized so both me and my students can easily find materials, papers, pencils, etc. This helps with classroom management by saving time, energy, and off-task behavior. If students know exactly where to go to get a sharp pencil, or a reading book, or when to use the bathroom, it will eliminate tons of wasted time throughout the day, as well as many behavior problems.
To gain student attention, I plan to have many techniques laid out before the year begins, and practice them often with my students. These types of attention getters, such as "One two three, eyes on me" and "Freeze!" are fantastic strategies to gather students attention while also helping them get out a few wiggles if need be. Another component of student attention that is extremely important to my classroom management philosophy is the importance of brain breaks and movement throughout the day. I plan to have brain brakes often throughout the day, whenever needed.
Instruction is a large component of classroom management. Personally, I always enjoyed and learned best when information was presented to me in a hands-on fashion. Therefore, in my future classroom, I want to incorporate engaging and hands-on activities as often as possible. This will keep students moving and engaged, and they will be learning while still having fun. This will require much planning and organization, but that is a small price to pay for keeping my students as engaged as possible.
