Teaching Rules/Procedures:
No matter how many classroom rules and procedures teachers develop, they are pointless if students do not know how to use them, or remember using them. In my classroom, I want to make sure my students know the rules and procedures so they can be successful. My overall approach to helping students remember my rules and procedures is by modeling, role playing, and practicing. If students can visually see the rule or procedure, they can associate specific actions with that rule or procedure. Along with self-modeling, I will have students act out situations (rules/procedures) so others students can see their peer modeling the activity instead of an adult. As with anything, practice is key. I will not expect my students to be able to do each procedure perfectly on the first day. The more practice we get each time we need to follow a rule or procedure helps us to remember it the next time.
Rule: WE RESPECT EACH OTHER
First, I would explain what the word respect means. Then I would ask my students if they can think of any actions that would be considered respectful? Any that would be disrespectful? I would then ask students to pair up. One of the partners would be Tom, and one would be Mary. I would read a list of scenarios, after each scenario, I would first ask students what did the two children in the story do that was disrespectful/respectful? Then, the students will act out what the two students should have done instead, or what they could do to correct their behavior, or what they could keep doing to show respect.
Procedure: GATHERING MATERIALS
To help students practice gathering materials, I would begin by self modeling. I would have all students return to their desks. I would ask a student if it would be ok if I sat in his/her desk for a moment. While students were watching carefully, I would say each step of the procedure, and model it. I would say "Materials Time!" as the teacher. Then I would change to a student and say out loud, "First, I look at the Daily Tasks board and find the color next to Bin Manager. It's green! Thats my color!!" I would get up, walk over to the counter with the material bins. "My group animal is Elephant, so I see this bin has an elephant taped to the front. This must be my group's material bin!" I would grab the bin and return to my seat and place the bin in the middle, sit quietly, and wait. Then I would have students try. I would have one color try, then switch to another color, and rotate through until all colors had practice receiving the material bin.
